A few things we've learned from years of testing (and returning) the stuff.
Don't buy a gadget because it's clever β buy it because it solves a task you dread. A robot vacuum earns its keep if you hate vacuuming; if you don't mind it, skip the $800 model.
The best appliances have replaceable parts β filters, gaskets, batteries. A machine you can service yourself lasts years longer than a sealed unit you toss when one part fails.
A 6-quart cooker or mixer is perfect for 3-4 people but frustrating for one. Bigger isn't better β oversized appliances waste counter space and energy for meals you'll never make.
Pods, filters, and descaling solution add up. A cheaper machine with pricey consumables can cost more over three years than a premium one you refill yourself.
Side by side, so you can see where your money goes.

Real reviews from folks who've lived with these a while.
β β β β β"Bought the Le Creuset Dutch oven to replace a cheap enamel pot that chipped within a year. This thing is a beast β I've made everything from no-knead bread to Sunday ragΓΉ in it. Only gripe is it's genuinely heavy, so if you have wrist issues, be warned. Otherwise I'll be handing this down to my kids."
β β β β"We got the Roomba j9+ mostly because our golden retriever sheds like it's her full-time job. It's been great at keeping the fur under control and the self-emptying dock means I barely think about it. It did get stuck under the couch a couple times the first week until I taught it the no-go zones, but now it's basically part of the family."
β β β β β"The Barista Express Impress was my pandemic splurge and honestly it paid for itself vs. my daily cafΓ© habit. The auto-dosing makes consistent shots way easier than my old manual setup. Fair warning β there's a real learning curve with dialing in the grind, and it takes up more counter space than the photos suggest. Two months in and my morning latte is better than my local shop's."
